A Friday night parting gift from our leader...

Two of a kind...

Where's all of that promoting freedom horseshit we heard in the inaugural speech?

Comming soon: An essay on greed

Those of you who know me know that I've been developing a theory on human motivations over the past few years in which greed plays the central roll. Some time in the next month or so I'll try to post a chunk of it here, stay tuned if you're interested...

Hunter S. Thompson is dead....

Shit, there goes another one of my favorite counter culture icons... This just reinforces something that I've suspected for a while, the world was meant for the idiots, those that are too intelligent can't take living here for too long. RIP HST, I'm playing a little Don McLean for you...

Additional thoughts: Who will speak for us now? We'll all have to speak a little louder. What better way to stick it to The Man than to become The Man?

Back to the Green River!

Well, the permits just keep rolling in. This afternoon I got a launch date (4JUL05) for Desolation and Grey Canyons of the Green River in Utah. This 128 mile wilderness run should be quite a hoot, for those of you who may be interested in a 6-7 day trip, feel free to drop me a line...

Oh my God, it's the GAYS!!!

It looks like the Zealots of the religious right are at it again here in Colorado with another attempt at a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. It's not like we have major policy issues like wars and deficits to worry about, oh, wait... What is with these people that they spend all of their energy focused on this issue which isn't even mentioned in the new testament. "Yeah, fuck all that turn the other cheek crap, Jesus really meant to say burn the fags at the stake"??? To top it all off, here's what really gets me going about "Focus on the Family"; their rank hypocracy. The article mentioned above quotes one of their VPs Tim Minnery. I went to high school with Tim's son Dave. Dave had quite the little drug problem (he dropped enough acid to ensure a lifetime of tracers and flashbacks) when we were in school yet his father has the gall to come out and say he has all the answers on how to raise a family properly? Whoa, back up there bud, why don't you get your own house in order before you try to tell other people how to live...

Time to weigh in on the Ward Churchill debate...

For those of you who may not know, Ward Churchill is an ethnic studies professor at CU boulder who has ignited a fire storm of controversy over his immediate reaction to the 9/11 attacks three and a half years ago. The media is in a total frenzy over this one with the oft repeated tag line "He compared the 9/11 victims to Nazis".
Well, unlike the majority of our hype crazed "journalists", I sat down and read Churchill's paper On the Justice of Roosting Chickens last night. Surprisingly, contrary to the media hype, I was unable to find the line that said that the "9/11 victims are Nazis" In one spot he does compare the technocrats employed at the trade center to Adolf Eichmann, who was incharge of train transport in eastern Europe during WWII, and was later famously captured by the Mossad in Argentina and hanged in Israel for his involvement in organizing the transport for the Holocaust. The point that I believe he is trying to make here is that "evil" policy needs to be implemented by someone and through the act of implementation that person becomes culpable, not that those killed in 9/11 were Nazis.
While I don't agree with everything Churchill says, he does make many very valid points. His essay is much more accurate than the "they hate us because we love freedom" drivel that W spouted and continues to spout after the attacks. I would recommend that each of you read the essay for yourselves if you're interested in this story, don't let the hype peddlers be your sensor...

Just deserts for an egotistical ho

That's right kids, our reviled CEO Carleton S. Fiorina has been pushed out by the board. I would say that she gets to feel the pain of being layed off, like she's done to thousands of my former co workers but I know better, the board pushed her out of the plane with a 21.1 Million Dollar parachute. Unfortunately, this news does not mean things will be all roses around here, in fact I think my job is even less secure than it was before. This may be one of those cases where you want to be careful what you wish for, only time and the new CEO will tell...

My brother continues to live a charmed life...

I'm reasonably certain that he was a tortured monk in a former life as nearly everything falls his way in this one. Ben got an invite yesterday to run the Grand Canyon in April. I can't even begin to tell you how jealous I am about that one, especially since he won't/can't bring his own brother with him. This 18 day river trip is the most coveted run in the Western hemisphere, hopefully, one day I'll get a shot... Bastard...

Another greedy asshole...

For a change this person isn't a politician. According to this story in the Denver Post, two girls in rural Durango decided to bake cookies and deliver them as a surprise to their neighbors. It seems that one neighbor, Wanita Renea Young, had a panic attack and went to the hospital the day after the 10:30pm cookie delivery. She then decided to use it as an excuse to sue the two girls for her hospital expenses and hopefully a punitive windfall. Our greedy friend Wanita kept right on plugging with her lawsuit even after the girls families offered to pay her medical expenses. I don't even know where to begin on this one, if a 10:30pm cookie delivery causes this much stress and then unleashes your greedy side to this extent, perhaps you need to retire from life permanently...

Didn't they learn a thing from Tricky Dick?

You'd have thought Ken Lay and friends would have learned something from their conservative idol Richard Nixon; whatever you do don't get caught saying it on tape! It turns out that there were more Enron tapes released today and, surprise, surprise the company was doing some nasty things. Thank god the free market was there to protect us, oh wait a minute, you mean to say they were able to manipulate that market while certain regulatory agencies turned a blind eye (perhaps due to large contributions to certain politicians)? Is it possible that companies such as this don't operate in the "free" market like the rest of us, perhaps their reality is closer to crony capitalism? Then you'd have to ask, just who would those cronies be? Could it be someone who's largest campaign donor in 2000 was Ken Lay?

Krugman just keeps knocking them out of the park...

NYTimes editorial economist Paul Krugman brings us another slice of fiscal reality with his latest work: Gambling with your retirement. This work shows that, much like the rest of W's programs, his social security "reform" is largely faith based, enjoy...

Hack weighs in with an overdue piece...

COL David Hackworth (Ret.) finally uses his weekly column to address the issue of those who almost certainly ordered the Abu Ghraib mess and then walked away scot free. He rightly states that those in charge need to be brought to trial, not just those that did their biding. Do I think this will happen, not likely. As usual, the worst that will probably happen to any of them will be one or two ended careers. After all, they were only following the president's orders... where have we heard that before...

Finally, some numbers in the Social Security debate...

This debate has been marked by the fact that no one has been willing to put up any numbers to support their position, not anymore. Krugman drops the bomb on the numbers game and shows, in my opinion, why we have yet to see any real numbers from the administration. The reason is, of course, that numbers would show this plan for what it is; a giant ponzee scheme to hand our tax dollars to wall street and hope for the best...

This just in from the Colossal Waste of Resources Department...

This has to be the worst example of feel good fake security that I've seen in years. Doing background checks and fingerprinting hazmat truckers? WTF is this going to accomplish except to waste the time and money of all involved. Yeah, I guess if someone wanted to use a hazmat truck for a suicide bombing this would stop them right. Because as we all know, terrorists would take the time to go through the background check process, they would never dream of breaking the law. What a colossal waste, who ever dreamed this one up ought to be run over by a hazmat truck, it would do more good than this policy ever will...
